Schoooooollllssssssssss back. In. Session!

Yeah I just went there.  Sorry.  I'm gonna kinda guilty-ly admit I'm kinda happy schools back on.  My kids are not iddy biddies anymore, 9 & 12, but man they do tend to get what I call "T-rex syndrome" when their arms suddenly get really short and they can't reach or do anything for themselves.  Do you know what I mean?  So I'm looking forward for a bit of silence during the day.

On another note yesterday was a loooong day, the water heater decided that the garage needed to be washed off, so I don't have the strength to ramble on, plus my fingers hurt from ringing out of towels.  So I'm gonna try to be short on words in this post.

Me and mom went to two estate sales on Friday, and these were our finds.

We raked in on the vintage vanity mirrored trays and frames.

A Conair retro style phone.  Does anyone know when these came out, late 80s or early 90s?  I'm trying to determine if it's still considered vintage.

Thrift Share Monday - July 2

Happy Birthday to my little MT.  He is 9 today.  I asked him what would happen when he turns nine.  He said "I'll get bigger and stronger."  Aw!  My little boy it gonna get bigger.  :-(  Where did my itty-bitty babies go?  On the plus side, they are no longer babies, and they can somewhat fend for themselves. 

So onto my thrifting/estate sale finds. 

Got this, in fantastic condition, sewing chair with seat storage that is filled.  I still haven't gone through whats inside yet, but look at the picture I see some pinking shears, a new seam ripper....

Another metal shelf.  That matches the one I bought a few months back, but smaller.  I'll never beat the price of $1 for the large, 3' x 5',  shelf I got at a church sale, but for $4 this smaller one, 3'x3', is still a great buy.  It'll be perfect for markets as well.

Salt and pepper shakers.

More shakers, but they are stacking Tupperware shakers. 

This super cute Bisquick canister, with recipes on the back.

I got this roll of fabric (it looks like toilet paper in the picture, but it's really fabric), and I'm not sure what kind of fabric it is.  It doesn't seem to be cotton.  Anyone familiar with fabric being sold this way?  It's about 6 inches wide by who knows how many yards...maybe 10(?).  The question is what am I gonna do with it, you know sometimes you just can't pass things by, and at $2.50 I wasn't passing it by.

Last but not least vintage sheets.  Yay!  Last week I had two orders for vintage sheet fat quarters, which totaled 100 fat quarters.  So that put a dent in my sheet stash, but I guess the vintage sheets fairies were watching because I got a great big stack of them this week from a thrift store and estate sale. 
 
This has been one of my favorite patterns. I've had this sheet before that I've made into a bag, and I've used it as a part of my shop sign. Now I have three times as much, top and fitted sheets and pillow cases.  Yay!

Thrift Share Monday - March 26

Boring estate sales this weekend, and really blah garage sales, but I have some small finds from the thrift stores. 

The Goodwill surprised me this week (and it very RARELY does).  I almost passed this (well I did several times) since it was on a top shelf (I'm bad with not looking up).  What a super cute Anchor Hocking retro pitcher.  Love it!

Since I'm mentioning Goodwill let me ask you all a question.  Have you noticed that Goodwill is trashier than most other thrift stores? (At least around here it is)  I usually steer clear of here, for one prices are usually higher than the other thrift stores I shop, I never find vintage sheets here (or the one time I did it was $9 for the sheet compared to the $3-$4 I usually spend), and their shelves are absolute disaster zones.  Stuff is literally just thrown onto the shelves, so messy, cluttered, and just unappealing to look at.

Ok, onto the next items.  These were happy finds, since  I scored them at a shop I've been too only once before (it's a very small thrift store, at a weird traffic spot, but I think I'll need to make the effort to go more often).  I got this great Square Flower Pyrex divided casserole, 

and this glass.  What? A single glass was a find?  Yup!  Especially when you have three already like it, two small and one large.  Now I have two large to complete the set.  Happy dance!

At one of my favorite thrift stores, I scored this super cute, tiny, mid-century, Lane Furniture, side table for $8, but since I was spending a total of $15 (including vintage sheets) I was able to use a $5 off coupon.  Therefore this table was $3.  Wooot!

Got this Fire King McDonald's, milk glass mug.   I looked this up on Ebay and saw a fluctuation in prices based on how many mugs were being sold.  One mug goes anywhere from $1-$6, but if you have multiple mugs the prices go up.  One listing had 6 mugs and sold for almost $70.  I'll hold onto this and see if I bump into any more.  In the meantime it will be a nice mug to have around, McDonald's is very nostalgic for me. 



Now my vintage sheet finds.  I've tried not to buy sheets with white being the primary color, but these were all great so I couldn't pass them up.

And then these.  These were found at separate thrift stores.  I especially love the daisies with the pink center.  I think it would make a great spring dress.  Now only if I could make dresses.  :-/ 

I'm looking forward to the end of this week.  Got a church around the block from me that will be having a 48 hour garage sale.  Yeah, that's right for 48 hours they'll have their parking lot all decked out garage sale style while they camp out and sell.

Thrift Share Monday -January 2 .....also my Blog-iversary

Happy Blog-iversary to me!  

That's it. One blow of the noise maker, and one handful toss of confetti in the air.  I'm not one to find celebrating stuff for myself is all that important.  Sad...I know.

Anywho....

Well I have a couple of items to thrift share that were obtained at an estate sale early December.  Items which will teach me not to take my mom to estate sales with me in the future. (haha) 

We were on our way out to buy our Christmas tree and I persuaded my mom to go on a detour with me to an estate sale, that was completely a bit in the opposite direction of where we were heading.  The title of this estate sale was intriguing "Large Estate of Prominent Surgeon", and 5,000 sq.ft.; stuck in my head.

My usual routine when I go thrifting is, for the most part, I'm in and out (I'm not trained enough to know what's good to resell at a profit therefore I steer away from a lot of purchases).  I do an initial round about the place and do a second round if something caught my eye the first time.  Nothing caught my attention and I was done with the place pretty fast.  I lingered a bit because my mom was slowly roaming....s-l-o-w-l-y.  I tried to keep occupied and looked interested by looking through books, or other little knick knacks, and roamed the house a few more times.

My mom was enthralled with the house.  Things like the fire place reminded her of my dad. The furniture was very 70's-ish, and the backyard was gorgeous since it backed up to a golf course.  She took her time and look at items, and said how beautiful it was, or this is just "so gorgeous".  This was very strange to me since this is not how she talks.  I normally don't hear her describe items as beautiful or gorgeous.  So I was a bit thrown off, and weirded out (insert Twilight Zone music here.... no, not Edward and Jacob Twilight).

She stood and looked at these...."these are sooo beautiful".  

 

 

This set contained 8 of these containers (?), casserole dishes (?), kitchen decor? With the pheasant to the left being the lone large one of them all. 

This turtle has some really beautiful glazing, though my photo doesn't do it any good.

I don't even know what these would be called,  and have had the hardest time looking up info on them.  They weren't cheap either.  I looked at the price tag and thought yup at $200 those would be nice.

Anyone familiar with these?  They are stamped at the bottom Portugal. 

Then I saw my mom caressing this lamp.  "Isn't this just so gorgeous?"  Yeah I don't doubt an $80 wouldn't  lamp look nice.

She roamed this place for an hour, when I was done with it after nearly 10 minutes.  I will admit I did see some neat stuff.  Like it was apparent that the estate was of a brain surgeon.  There were slides of sliced up brains with tumors and other gross stuff like that lying out on a table to view, along with a wall of medical books.

After her circling numerous times in this large home I asked her if she wanted the items she caressed, the lamp and Pheasant dishes (?), for Christmas.  She looked at me shocked, and said "Well, I was gonna tell you not to buy me anything for Christmas." I told her I'd split it with my two sisters and since it was the last day of the estate sale everything was 50% off.  She immediately said "Ok".

What just happened? That agreement happened too quick. 

So an hour and $140 later we got her Christmas shopping done early and out of the way.  Plus they were gifts she actually loved.   Yay!

Is it old(er) age where you start loving or admiring odd things or verbalizing it out loud?  I remember my great-grandma would save the Styrofoam that meat comes on and use it as a plate sometimes because "it was too nice to throw away".   "This is really nice Styrofoam".  Strange memories.  :-)

Thrift Share Monday November 21

One event/holiday/birthday down and 6 to go.  My sister got married this weekend, and it was so wonderful.  She got married Thursday evening, and we froze as temps dropped to 50 degrees (outdoor venue) in strapless and sleeveless dresses.  Luckily this was just the ceremony and we weren't out all night.  Saturday she had the reception, also outdoors, and the weather could not have been any better; it was perfect.

For the reception we used 100+ thrifted mason jars with sand and candles as center pieces.  I, personally, didn't get any center piece pictures since tables were occupied with food and drinks by the time the candles were lit but here is a test grouping we did to see how they would look.

So now there are two more holidays and 4 birthdays to go in the next 6 weeks.  Yikes!!

With the running around for the wedding.  Mostly looking for my dress and something for the kids to wear my thrifting has been almost non-existent.  I've managed to hit up a single thrift shop maybe once a week.

However, I have managed to sparsely score a vintage sheet here and there.    Plus I do have some items I haven't shared with you yet, from past thrift shop visits, and 'tis the, approaching, season it's time to share.

My son loves penguins, so when I saw this uniquely white penguin cookie jar at a thrift store, months ago, I had to buy him.  My son was a bit perplex on why he was white, and he asked if I was was going to paint him.  I think this white penguin will go perfect sitting next to my black Christmas tree, which I hope to get set up in the next week.

 

Another Christmas purchase was also months ago at an estate sale.  A glass tree jar.  The top lifts off to insert  little treats or decorations.  My grandma had one just like it, and I remember she would fill it with vintage-ish hard candy just like this.... 











 It's always bitter-sweet when random little things remind me of my grandma.  We all miss her so much.   

Onto my vintage sheet finds.  These have slowly been collected over the last 6 weeks.  Now bringing my collection over 60 vintage sheets, with just under 60 listed on Flickr.
