My Fav Friday - outdoor photos

Photography doesn't appear to be my strong suit based on the crafty, thrifting, sewing photos I post.  However, I love to take pictures.

At one time my favorite pictures to take were of my kids, but since they've gotten older that's changed.  Is it because I don't like photographing them anymore?  No, of course not.  It's because they scatter, like roaches when the light gets turned on, when they see the camera aimed at them.  Plus if there are still for a moment they are making silly, googlyed eye faces.  Sigh.

So I've turned to objects that are not as mobile as my kids; nature, statues and buildings.

I love taking photos of flowers.  I'm always in awe at how beautiful some flowers are; the colors or their shapes just lure me.  They are even more luring when butterflies linger around them.

The Texas heat was awful this summer, so I was extremely surprised to find some gorgeous flowers while out visiting San Antonio this morning.  We took some family by the Alamo and it wasn't long before my eyes caught some flowers worthy to take pictures of.  My phone was quickly whipped out to take pictures.

Angel trumpets are one of my favorite flowers.  I love how they dangle facing down from a small tree like bush.  These flowers are ginormous; larger then the width and length of my hand.

I don't know the name of these little purple flowers, but gotta take pictures when there are butterflies present.
Non floral related, here is a building in San Antonio with an optical illusion.   This was taken while on the Riverwalk boat tour; a boat ride below street level. When passing this building, a hospital, it appears that it is just one free standing wall.  However, it's just that the building is built in a triangular shape so you tend not to see the angles you'd normally see if the building was square or rectangular shaped.

Here are some more favorite photos I've taken in the past.

These are 4" pots this butterfly is tending too.  That's one huge butterfly!

My Fav Friday - Is it big hair?

There are a whole bunch of movies I love; that I will watch over and over again, but two of my utmost all time favorites are ...

Labyrinth and Amadeus.

The moment I thought up this post I then realized Jareth (David Bowie) and Amadeus have the same hair.  Is this pure coincidence?  Or is it my 80's love of glam-rock hair bands?  Or is it just 80's music, hair, and movies all together?

I remember the first time I saw both of these movies, and both times were at school.

I was in 4th grade when I saw Labyrinth, in Mrs. Tolliver's class.  It must have been one of those bonus days where we were rewarded with a movie.  From that day on it was a constant VHS rental at the local grocery store.  I don't remember when we finally got around to actually buying it, but since then I've upgraded to a DVD.

Oh my god.  I even remember one year my older sister bought me, as a birthday present, the soundtrack to the movie on record, not tape, and CD's were non-existent back then. Sweet round vinyl.  Oh she did copy it onto a tape for me so that I could listen to it.  I was soooo happy to have it, but back then I didn't know what a soundtrack was.  So initially I was sooo mad when the script of the movie didn't play during the precise spot in the music.  What?  Why isn't Sarah reciting her script?

"Through dangers untold, and hardships unnumbered.
I have fought my way here to the castle beyond the goblin city,
to take back the child that you have stolen.
For my will is as strong as yours and my kingdom is as great."

Later realizing a soundtrack is just the music to the movie.  Duh!!

Jareth and David Bowie....I do love you.  My daughter has already accepted you as my boyfriend, but my son still thinks you're a witch.

"I ask for so little.
Just love me.
Fear me.
Do as I say,
and I will be your slave."

Then on to Amadeaus.  I was in 7th grade when I first saw this movie, and it was in Mr. Lopez' orchestra class.  Yup I played the violin from 6th grade up to 11th.

I remember the guys in class kinda giggling when Contanza first appears in a scene with her bosom practically popping out of her lovely gown.  Mr. Lopez kinda grumbles a "settle down" to the class. Ah what memories.

I love the look and the feel of this movie, and definitely the laugh of Woofie.  Just the thought of him laughing makes me smile.

My fav Friday - Rain lilies

One of my most favorite things is what pops up a few days later after it rains...

Rain lilies.

These little beauties start to appear around three days after it rains.

The amazing thing is that here in central Texas we've been in a severe drought and the Rain Lilies still come up after a rain.

You could see here a pretty much dead yard sprinkled with Rain Lilies.  I took these pictures on my way to work....so this is not my yard.  To my dismay, we don't get them in our yard, but I've been debating on buying seeds or bulbs for these online so that this will happen in my yard.  I wouldn't mind these outside my door a few days after it rains.  :-)

My Fav Friday

Time flies.  It feels like I've done nothing but I have been sewing....kinda.  I've worked on a skirt block and made a pencil skirt, and I have been working on my vintage sheet quilt.  I'll get some post on these next week, but for now lets see if I could get a fav knocked out this week.

This fav subject popped up in discussion last week with my 8 year old son.

"Why do you always watch The Young and the Restless?" he asked.

Well, obviously, because I like it.  "Why do you always watch Pokemon, Ben 10,  or the dozen other shows you watch?" I asked him, and he had the same reply, because he likes those shows.

I proceeded to tell him I've watched The Young and the Restless as long as I could remember, since I was little.  He made a grossed out face and said "but it's for grown ups".  Yeah, "but when I was little my grandma would watch it, so that meant I would watch it, because cartoons were not on all day long."

*Shock* The concept of no kid t.v. during the day is foreign.  He starts questioning when were cartoons on and for how long?

Now from what I remember cartoons were only on, during the week, for about an hour in the morning, usually on PBS and for about an hour in the late afternoon; during the after school hour.  Then there were Saturday morning cartoons for about 3 hours.  After those times it was all "grow-up" shows.

He soon got bored of this subject, and walked way.  Haha.

Anyways,  I love The Young and the Restless.  I've seriously watched it as long as I could remember.  Of course I'd go those long stretches of not seeing it during the day like when I was in school, but in the summer I would watch it, and you'd get up to date quickly on what's been going on.  Then there was the rare day off/holiday when it was actually on and I would get a quick fix, but now there is the Soapnet channel.  They've been running The Young and the Restless the last several years, and boy was I happy when this happened.  Also you can watch same day episodes on-line, which I do when I miss my 6 pm showing (I don't have Tivo).  Eek!  And the days I miss it in the evening and I don't get a chance to watch it on-line at home, I can now watch it during my lunch break on my phone while sitting in my car.  Yeah...I'm a nut like that.

I don't know what it is that has me so drawn to it, but I love it.  It's a guilty pleasure.  Guilty?  No, it's not a guilty pleasure....it's simply a pleasure.  ;-)

So what did you watch as a kid that was not a cartoon?  In the evenings I remember as a kid watching Golden Girls, Night Court, Designing Women....etc.  I could not picture my kids watching those shows today, and it's very unlikely I'll watch reruns of those either.
